New York Judge Grants Donald Trump’s Request to Pause $464m Fraud Judgment
In a significant legal development, a judge in New York has granted former President Donald Trump’s request to pause the $464 million fraud judgment against him. The judge has given Trump a 10-day window to provide a reduced sum of $175 million.
Trump’s legal team had previously cited difficulties in securing a bond from a private company for the full amount, leading to the request for a reduced bond. The former president faced a looming deadline to meet the $464 million bond requirement, failing which authorities in New York could have initiated seizures of his bank accounts and properties.
However, a last-minute reprieve was granted by an appeals court on Monday, allowing Trump additional time to meet the financial obligation. Trump expressed respect for the court’s decision, pledging to abide by it and fulfill the bond requirement through either cash, equivalent securities, or bond.
Paying the reduced bond of $175 million would temporarily halt enforcement of the fraud judgment, safeguarding Trump’s assets as he continues to pursue his appeal. Additionally, the appeals court has agreed to delay enforcement of other penalties included in the original judgment, such as prohibiting Trump and his elder sons from engaging in business activities in New York.
