Luc Triangle declared sole candidate for ITUC General Secretary
In a recent development, Luc Triangle, presently serving as the Acting General Secretary of ITUC, has garnered significant support from affiliates across various regions. Astonishingly, he stands as the sole candidate nominated for the position, a fact that has ignited both interest and controversy within the online news media sphere.
Expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming support, Luc Triangle conveyed his eagerness to formally present his candidacy at the upcoming Congress. He emphasized the critical need for a robust and unified ITUC to champion the rights of working individuals. This display of solidarity among member organizations during the General Council’s discussions underscores their unwavering commitment to strengthening the ITUC’s influence and impact.
In addition to the nomination buzz, the General Council tackled several other contentious issues. These included a comprehensive examination of trade union involvement in BRICS processes and the L20, the trade union counterpart to the G20. Of particular note was the exclusionary stance taken during the Indian G20 Presidency, where the Modi government unsuccessfully attempted to sideline L20 unions in favor of their allies within the Hindu nationalist labor movement.
Furthermore, the Council received an update on ongoing efforts to resolve the impasse at the International Labour Organization (ILO) concerning the right to strike. This issue is now being referred to the International Court of Justice, further highlighting the contentious nature of labor rights discussions on the global stage. Additionally, a working group was established to assess ITUC affiliation fee bands, which are designed to reflect varying levels of national economic development and related concerns.
As the ITUC continues to grapple with these critical issues, the spotlight will remain firmly on Luc Triangle’s candidacy. The next rendezvous for the General Council is slated to occur in Brussels from December 12 – 14, 2023, promising further developments and debates on these pressing matters.
