Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger’s withdrawal from ECOWAS will affect their citizens – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed regret over the recent announcement by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The decision, made by the countries currently under military rule, is based on their perception that ECOWAS has become obsolete and does not align with their objectives.

As a former ECOWAS Chair, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the unfortunate impact this decision would have on the affected populations. He revealed that discussions among ECOWAS leaders are pending to assess the consequences of the withdrawal and determine the future course of action. President Akufo-Addo stated, “This regrettable move by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to exit the ECOWAS community will have adverse effects on their citizens. However, ECOWAS is yet to convene. The incident occurred on Sunday, and we are awaiting direction from the head, Nigerian President Tinubu, to schedule a summit where we can deliberate on the implications and chart a way forward for the community.”
