Alan Kyerematen Resigns from NPP to Run as Independent Presidential Candidate in 2024
Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has officially resigned from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and declared his candidacy for the upcoming 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate.
His decision is poised to reshape Ghana’s political landscape, transcending the long-standing duopoly of the two major political parties – the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing the media during a press conference held in Accra on Monday, September 25, 2023, Kyerematen outlined the driving force behind his bold move. He expressed that his decision to break away from the NPP and pursue an independent path stems from the party’s failure to address his concerns and those of his ardent supporters. He emphasized that he and his supporters had not received fair treatment within the party.
The prominent politician, affectionately known as Alan Cash, believes that his independent candidacy will usher in a transformative era in Ghanaian politics by dismantling divisive partisanship and putting an end to the prevailing “winner takes all” political dynamics. In addition to this vision, Kyerematen called for comprehensive reforms within the internal democratic processes and procedures of all political parties. He proposed the implementation of the ‘One Man One Vote’ (OMOV) system to foster inclusivity and diminish the influence of monetary factors in politics.
Alan Kyerematen’s decision to contest the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate marks a significant turning point in Ghana’s political landscape. His call for reforms and commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable political environment resonates with a growing sentiment for change in the country’s political arena. As the race for the presidency intensifies, all eyes will be on Alan Kyerematen and the impact of his independent candidacy on Ghana’s political future.
