President Mahama Appoints COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu as New IGP

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector General of Police(IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare.

A press statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced that the swearing-in ceremony is set to take place on Friday, March 14. While the government has not provided an official reason for Dr. Akuffo-Dampare’s removal, sources indicate that the decision is part of a broader restructuring effort within the Ghana Police Service.

Dr. Akuffo-Dampare, who assumed office as IGP in 2021, is credited with implementing significant policing reforms, including community engagement initiatives and strengthening internal discipline within the service. The appointment of COP Yohunu is expected to usher in a new era of leadership for the police force as the government moves to enhance security and law enforcement in the country.
