NDDA pledges support for GAWU to make the district child labour-free

The District Chief Executive of the Noth Dayi District Assembly (NDDA), Kudjoe Edmund Attah, has pledged his support to the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) in their quest to eradicate child labour from his district.

He acknowledged the efforts of GAWU in other communities and districts in his region, adding that the goals of his office and government were very much aligned to the work GAWU was undertaking in the region.

He also said that work started by the District Assembly had helped to minimize the optics. “…We carried out some sensitization on the prevention of child labour and child trafficking. Indeed, it is not supposed to end there. Through Internally Generated Funds (IGF), we have budgeted some funds to support such activities”.

Beyond the sensitization efforts, Honourable Kudjoe expressed concern about case management as a critical area of concern. “If you went and sensitized the public, and so what? My concern is tilted more towards empowering families and the communities and so the district has formed a business advisory committee where we will deliberate on ways to support the livelihoods of the affected families”, the DCE said in an exclusive interview recently.

The GAWU team, with support from the NDDA, held a meeting with traditional leaders, assembly members, representatives of teacher unions and other stakeholders to educate them on repercussions of child labour and the need to for their involvement in eradicating it completely from their communities.

So far, GAWU has successfully established and inaugurated anti child labour clubs with 134 members in seven schools in the Aveme and Torkor-Dzigbe Zones as well as Community Child Protection clubs in some other zones.
