US Rapper Killer Mike Detained Shortly After Winning Three Grammy Awards
US rapper Killer Mike was detained following an altercation shortly after winning three Grammy awards, according to Los Angeles police.
The incident took place inside the Crypto.com Arena where the ceremony was held. The 48-year-old, also known as Michael Render, was booked on a misdemeanor charge but later released. Video footage indicated that he was escorted in handcuffs by police officers.
The altercation occurred after Killer Mike, a political activist, won three Grammy awards, including best rap song, best rap performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” and best rap album for “Michael.” He addressed doubters during his acceptance speech, stating, “This is for all the people who think you’re too old to rap… we keep hip-hop alive. Never ever stop doing what you do.”
Witnesses reported hearing shouts of “free Mike” as he was led away. Killer Mike has been an outspoken advocate on issues affecting black Americans, such as police brutality and racism. The Grammy Awards were largely dominated by Taylor Swift, who achieved a historic fourth win for best album.
